Local county council on front foot against tenancy fraud

Callcredit Information Group welcomes the recent move by the City of York council to prosecute an individual illegally subletting her council property.

Andrew Davis, Director of Public Sector at Callcredit commented: "From our own research we know that the unlawful letting of a property as in this particular instance, is the most common type of tenancy fraud accounting for approximately 40% of all cases.  We work alongside a number of local authorities to assist them in creating effective tenancy fraud strategies and provide third-party data matching to identify potential fraudulent activity. We fully support the stance taken by the City of York Council and it clearly demonstrates their commitment to tackling tenancy fraud. With social housing waiting lists exceeding 2.3m homes it is important that tenancy fraudsters are evicted to ensure the most vulnerable are next in line for available properties"
